FIFA has announced it’s ten contenders for the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player at the World Cup.

Here is the video available at FIFA.com highlighting the skills of the ten players.

Our poll below shows the ten players who have been nominated:

My guess is that if Spain wins on Sunday, Xavi will win the award. Most fans still don’t seem to notice his greatness but the experts do. In 2006 for instance, the expert voters were so impressed by Zidane’s performances that they disregarded his headbutt and still gave him the award.

Win or lose, I’m going to vote for Xavi. Holland’s Sneijder and Robben have been fantastic but they are no Xavi in my eyes.

And btw – if he had a better manager and supporting cast, I think we’d all be voting for Messi.

Yes Tossy Sneijder has had a great year. Interesting that Forlan should win the Golden Ball when he – like Sneijder – did not win the World Cup. If you don’t need to win it all then you could make a big argument for Sneijder who scored the same amount of goals as Forlan but did one better than him by getting his team into the final. From that angle then, you could argue that Forlan was merely a sentimental choice because he played above himself for a lesser team.
