Messi is definitely the best – at least according to our very own fan poll:

Vote now or forever hold your peace.

Let’s hope you’re right Muhammad. At least until the next World Cup. Messi’s won a lot of trophies already but a special player like him deserves to win the big one…May he indeed be the best forever…

One interesting thing about this poll’s results to date is the number of votes tallied by Ronaldinho (36) v Xavi (34) or Iniesta and Schweinsteiger (almost zero for both). Ronaldinho is very likely past his best-before date, and although he’s still capable of sublime football, hasn’t made much of a mark on the world stage lately. The other three have – all were integral to their teams’ World Cup success.

So WTF? Do BP voters undervalue the less, er, flashy approach of Xavi et al? Or are voters hanging onto the memory of Ronaldinho’s glory days, when the then-FIFA World Player was hitting the crossbar 4x running, etc, for Nike, and dazzling us all with crazy futsal antics via youtube?

Or are the voters right: Ronaldinho really IS better than Xavi, Andres, and Bastian?

Good point Shorty – there is no way Ronaldinho (who was ONCE the best) should be on par with Xavi or Iniesta. I wonder if this situation is inevitable with “fan voting” or if perhaps BPITW can someday find a better way of conducting such voting.
