Stosur wins US Open 1

Australian Samantha Stosur hammered Serena Williams to win the 2011 U.S. Open.

“Hammered” because the result didn’t ever seem to be in any doubt: Stosur won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Although Stosur was ranked #9 coming in and Williams #28, Serena was favoured to win the match – her ranking was uncharacteristically low (but rising fast) as she worked her way back from injuries that had seen her drop from world #1 to below the top 100.

One of the most telling camera shots in the video here is the look of total disbelief on WIlliams’ face just after the match. She hadn’t dropped a set in the tournament before facing Stosur and can’t seem to get her head around the fact she’s just had her bum rightly kicked.

Stosur, meanwhile, has enjoyed a very strong summer and will certainly see that #9 position move up some with today’s win.

I am so happy for Samantha ,how relaxed she was through the competetion. I was watching her, how controlled and professional in handling the situation ,she was in command upon winning the 1st set. When Serena was acting distressed and screamed after that winning points ultimately made her lost the game. Serena was really upset, hope it will end up that way and no more dramas with the umpire, The umpire should be restpected not screamed and abused.
