31-year-old comeback kid Venus Williams came back big on Friday evening at the Sony Ericsson Open, beating 3rd seed Petra Kvitova in a second-round match.
Venus hasn’t played in six months while receiving treatment for Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune condition. The layoff right now doesn’t seem to have hurt her tennis, though it’s definitely taken some pressure off her. (She is a three-time winner of this tournament.) Next up for Venus is a third-round match with Canadian wild card Aleksandra Wozniak.
Other Friday winners on the women’s side included BP faves like #1 seed Victoria Azarenka and #15 Ana Ivanovic.
On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Janko (the DJ) Tipsarevic, and Canada’s Milos Raonic all won to move on to the third round.
