Venus Willliams moves on

31-year-old comeback kid Venus Williams came back big on Friday evening at the Sony Ericsson Open, beating 3rd seed Petra Kvitova in a second-round match.

Venus hasn’t played in six months while receiving treatment for Sj√∂gren’s syndrome, an autoimmune condition. The layoff right now doesn’t seem to have hurt her tennis, though it’s definitely taken some pressure off her. (She is a three-time winner of this tournament.) Next up for Venus is a third-round match with Canadian wild card Aleksandra Wozniak.

Other Friday winners on the women’s side included BP faves like #1 seed Victoria Azarenka and #15 Ana Ivanovic.

On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Janko (the DJ) Tipsarevic, and Canada’s Milos Raonic all won to move on to the third round.
