Wow. American ace LaShawn Merritt destroys his nemesis, 20-year-old Grenadian Olympic champ Kirani James, to win the 2013 world 400m championship.
Merritt, drawn in a lane outside James, leads the entire way. Coming off the final bend, Merritt has the juice to accelerate and power down the stretch, while James – uncharacteristically – fades (eventually finishing a very disappointing 7th). The US’s Tony McQuay gets silver and Luguellin Santos of the Dominican Republic surges forward at the end to capture bronze.
Merritt’s time of 43.74 is the fastest in the world this year. A brilliant run from LaShawn.
