Canada’s Lanni Marchant @LJM5252 is enjoying a record-breaking fall season and has obviously found a rare groove in marathon racing lately.
Marchant is the Canadian record holder in the event: three years ago, she clocked 2 hours 28 minutes in winning the 2013 Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Just last weekend, Marchant placed 7th in the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:33.50 – the fastest time ever by a Canadian woman.
Lately, Marchant has been in the news off the race course – her address to Canada’s Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, focused on women and girls in sport, was followed by some online trolling about her competition wardrobe. Marchant made short work of the criticisms, then flew to New York, where in the marathon she did what no Canadian (including those commenting on her outfits) has ever done. Case closed.
At 32 years old, Marchant is clearly coming into her own these days and we’re looking forward to watching her set new PB’s in 2017.
