Cristiano Ronaldo was the Best Player in the World in 2016 2

Cristiano Ronaldo wins 2016 Ballon d'Or

It’s official – FIFA has awarded Cristiano Ronaldo the 2016 Ballon d’Or and confirmed that he was indeed the Best Player in the World for the 2016 calendar year.

Hard to argue with this decision as Cristiano won both the Champions League and Euro 2016.

A mighty fine year for Cristiano. Well done.

No argument with the selection. But in 2016’s Euro Cup, I felt Portugal was a better side without Ronaldo on the pitch, for all his talent. Don’t think they’d have won the championship had he not left the game with so much time to play. Best players may not always make their sides better. Messi does; Lebron and Crosby do; but I don’t think Cristiano does.

Good point, Abbot. Forgot about that Euro moment. One of the golden rules of Ballon voting is how well a player’s team did. What I think we sometimes forget is the extent to which a player actually contributes to championships. What is also difficult is to measure those contributions and then to compare them to other great players in a quantifiable way. For instance, is it possible that Messi or Suarez were the best players last season or in seasons past but did not win the Ballon? And – how would we measure that?
