Cristiano Ronaldo talks to ESPN’s Marty Smith about being the best – transcript

MS: As human beings we’re driven a lot of times by other human beings. What other players or player make you the best you?

CR: That’s a good question. To mention one is hard. But you know the level that I’m at is like in other sports Formula One, NBA. The best players always follow the best players. They want to be at the top of their game because the other ones are there. You cannot rest or sleep because the other ones can pass you. Of course we fight with everyone. With Neymar, with Messi, Lewandowski, with Higuain, with the best players in the world. This is not “fighting”. It is hard. It is healthy. We fight to be the best. My main point, my motivation is to be better than them year after year.

MS: What makes you feel fulfilled?

CR: I was yesterday with Peter Lim, the owner of Valencia and he said, “Cristiano, the most important thing is… we have money, we have everything, we have fame. I have millions and billions but the most important thing is your family. Keep your family healthy, good and take care of your family. This is the most important thing in the world. Apart from that of course you have your life, your private life, your cars, your houses, your fame, but in the beginning your family is always with you, for the good moments and bad moments.

MS: A lot of people depend on you, whether that’s family, guys that work for you, your children, your team, everybody…

CR: The press!… They put news about me to sell papers. I’m joking but at the same time it’s true. Many people depend on me, that’s true but to be honest if you’re thinking about that too much you lose your focus, which is the most important thing. My focus is to be a good man and to do my job properly. This is what I try to do. I know many people depend on me but this is another side of me and try to not focus on that because it’s important but it’s not the most important thing.
