The whole world now knows that the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or was won by Argentina’s amazing Lionel Messi, over his Barcelona teammates Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.
While those players may in fact be the three best players, the selection has raised some eyebrows, given that the brilliant Wesley Sneijder led Inter Milan to the Champions League title and the World Cup final, and a player like Wayne Rooney was not even acknowledged for a brilliant 2009-2010 performance that had many people saying he could be the best player in the world. Well, not only did Rooney not make FIFA’s 23 man shortlist for the Ballon but not a single Englishman made it that far. No doubt a bitter pill to swallow for a country that believes it is home to the “best league in the world.”
FIFA chose Messi in January, 2011 – based on performances that essentially occurred up to the last World Cup. But we want to know who you think is the best player right now and who continues to be the best player through this season and up to the Champions League Final in May.
And we want you to enter our contest. To do this all you need to do is:
1. Register an account at Bestplayerintheworld.com.
2. Create a profile with us, with either a real picture of you or a lovely smiling avatar.
3. Make your case for your Best Player by commenting at the bottom of this post.
4. Vote on the poll at the bottom of this very post (hint: the poll re-opens every day: so you can vote every day for your Best Player)
What are we looking for in the contest judging? Well…we are looking for both quality and quantity: make some really good comments on your player and keep coming back and making more comments and getting involved in the discussion over who is the Best Player. That’s about it. And – unlike FIFA – we won’t be using the calendar year. We will judge the best player by the season he has – the 2010-2011 season. Voting and commenting in our contest will end May 29, 2011 – the day after the Champions League Final. On that date we will announce both the name of the fan who wins the Fans Choice posting contest and the name of the player who wins our poll.
It will be interesting to see – won’t it? – how fan voting in May compares to the voting process involving FIFA committee members, managers, players and media in 2010. Btw – The winner of our little contest will get a $100.00 US gift certificate at WorldSoccerShop.com plus a special edition bestplayerintheworld.com t-shirt.
Good luck, happy commenting and don’t forget to vote in our poll. Your vote could help make your favourite player the Fans Choice for Best Player in the World !
