Senna could win an Oscar? Posthumously? There is an Academy Award for driving?
Well, kind of. If anyone should win one of those golden men it’s Ayrton Senna who has been acknowledged by his peers as the best F1 driver of all time.
I just saw this film and absolutely loved it. There were many moments when I was moved to tears by this exquisitely told story about the life and death of a Brazilian hero.
Two things struck me about this story.
One was that Brazil’s love affair with Senna was so deep that it seemed to transcend even the peoples’ obsession with soccer / futebol. And we know how important futebol is in Brazil. Brazilians loved Senna that much.
Second was the decision to forgo a re-enactment of Senna’s life and go with real footage to tell his story.
This decision paid off handsomely. Ironically, after a long process of research and editing that took many years, the story seemed to me so well told and the personality of Senna so bright, that as I watched I actually thought that the character I was watching on the screen was being performed by the best actor in the world.
But it was the real Senna.
No actor.
But what a character. What a man. And what a driver.
If you like inspiring sports stories and films – this a movie you should not miss.
See it now – because you’ll want know what all the fuss is about when it is up for the best feature documentary Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards on Februrary 26, 2012.
