Cristiano Ronaldo

We spend a lot of time talking about Lionel Messi here – he was after all recently awarded the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or by the coaches, captains and journalists of the world – but there are a lot of other great players out there doing a lot of great things.

Yesterday’s Copa del Rey match between Barcelona and Real Madrid demonstrated just how much other talent there is out there.

Now Messi did get the talent show going himself yesterday when he went on one of his trademark field-length runs and slipped the ball between two desperate Madrid defenders for a Pedro finish. The run and the inch-perfect ball were things of genius.

But as good as that Messi play was, the Argentine was upstaged within minutes when Barca full-back Dani Alves was in the right place at the right time on a corner-kick and lined-up a one-time laser with the laces of his right boot that found that small target where the top of the far post meets the crossbar. A dream goal by perhaps the best right-back in football.

Real Madrid looked to be out of the Cup after those two goals but I guess their players didn’t think so, playing a high-pressure game that saw Cristiano Ronaldo blow past what looked like a pensioner in Carles Puyol, glide past a shocked Barca keeper in Pinto and slide the ball into the open net. It was as if Ronaldo and co had suddenly found a new super-human level.

Puyol was made to look old and slow one more time when fresh substitute Karim Benzema dinked the ball over his head and hammered home the tying goal. A real striker’s goal.

Four different players in on four fantastic goals in a Barcelona-Madrid Clasico that was indeed a classic.

Add another tripleta to Cristiano’s 2011-12 score sheet, as the man known as CR7 scored 3 goals in yesterday’s 6-2 Real Madrid romp over Sevilla.

Ronaldo scored at 10′, 41′ and 85′ to take him to the top of the > La Liga goal scorers list with 20 goals in 2011.

And our very own > Hat-trick Tracker has him tied worldwide with Lionel Messi for the global hat-trick lead.

Great > piece by the Telegraph’s Paul Hayward in which he essentially declares the Messi-Ronaldo debate over:

“In 16 Clasicos Messi is credited with involvement in 21 goals (13 scored, and eight assists). On a night described by Xavi as “a turning point,” his Argentine accomplice rode meaty tackles, orchestrated from the No 10 position, broke wide and even chased Angel Di Maria 50 yards to hook the ball back. Booked for dissent, he might have been sent off for a heavy foul on Xabi Alonso, but we were spared that spectacle-wrecking flash of red.

“This is not a master of one or two arts but a landlord of the whole pitch, the whole game. To combine lethal finishing with such deftness of passing and spatial awareness amounts to cruelty against the rest of his profession.”

A very reasonable and poetic assessment to my mind. And I’d prefer to not focus on Ronaldo’s two unfortunate misses in that big game. I think we should just focus on Messi’s other-worldly qualities and his effectiveness.

However, Everton player Louis Saha – who played with Cristiano at Manchester United – is not so sure how effective Messi actually is. Saha sees more options in Ronaldo and sees a disconnect between Barca Messi and Lionel of Argentina:

“There is not a more complete player in the world,” Saha said to France Football. “He could play in any position. He will always score because he runs quicker and jumps higher than everyone. His endurance is crazy – his power of shot as well.

“He would score 30 goals in any team, because he can do it all on his own. Messi is maybe the best player in the world, but I am convinced he needs the team to play.”

So Messi is the best player but Cristiano is more complete?

I don’t see it.

For now I’m with Hayward, who beseeches us to enjoy Messi while we can because not only is Messi the best player now but also will be counted among the best ever.

Even Brazilian Neymar – who the great Pele thinks could be better than Messi > is willing to concede to Messi:

“I do believe Messi is the best player at the moment. He’s the one and only, he’s the king of football. To reach his level is something I don’t think I can do.”

Neymar – who has already scored > a highlight-reel goal at the tournament which is getting millions of views around the world – sounds so humble with his Santos team sure to face Messi’s Barcelona in the Club World Cup.

But who knows – maybe Neymar will be a bit bolder after the tournament is over if he is able to do what Cristiano has not been able to do lately and go toe-to-toe with Messi and Barcelona – the team that Saha says Messi is apparently so dependent on.

If that happens then we could be having a new conversation that will read Messi vs Neymar and no longer Messi vs Cristiano. Or at the very least it will be Messi vs Cristiano vs Neymar.

Or how about just Messi vs the World?
