David Rudisha

Unless you’re an athletics nut you may not know exactly who Kenya’s David Rudisha is. But we think you soon will…

He’s the current world record holder in the 800m – his time of 1:41.01 (set in the race filmed above) very close to the equivalent of running two consecutive 50-sec 400′s. In the video, you ‘ll see how hard he goes out on the outside. Then watch how strong he finishes in the final 300m. There’s nobody near him; you get the feeling that with better competition (or a pacer on both laps) he could go sub-1:40.

Rudisha won the latest Diamond League meet (London, last weekend) and is odds-on fave for this year’s World Championships. It’s when he takes the Olympic gold that even non-track fans may notice him…and if he ever switches to the 400m (his original specialty and the distance favoured by his father, a 4×400 silver medalist for Kenya in the Mexico Olympics), he’ll be a household name.

Oh – he’s only 22.
