I wonder if somehow Pele was misquoted or perhaps had a few too many glasses of wine with dinner.
Here’s how he responded to a question about Lionel Messi being the best player ever:
“Now everyone is talking about Messi; he is a star. But [to be the best ever] he must first become better than Neymar,” Pele said. “At the moment Messi is just more experienced.”
A curious twist on a question which actually seems to be about Pele and Maradona.
Why does he throw Neymar into the equation?
It is clear to most people these days that Messi is the best player in the world right now.
Even Neymar himself has admitted this.
I’m sure that very soon we’ll be hearing Pele retracting this statement.
Last week Messi was quoted as saying that he’d never seen Pele play. This week former Brazil star Romario is suggesting that the Argentine wonder kid logs on to Youtube:
“If Messi sees the video, he’ll probably learn some things,” Romario said at a press conference. “You simply cannot compare him with Pele. You cannot say he is the same when he has never won a World Cup.
“Messi has all the conditions to be the best one day, but first he has to overcome Maradona, Romario and then eventually Pele.”
We agree with Romario about Messi needing to surpass Maradona and Pele but we don’t agree with Romario about the Romario part.
Man – Romario still has that crazy ego. He was a great player but at best he belongs in a top 100 talk.
“For me Messi is now the best player there has ever been, and I never thought I would say there was a better player than Diego Maradona, but now there is – Messi.”
