A day of redemption for the under-appreciated and underpaid Canadian soccer star, Dwayne De Rosario.
We have been backing him here all along since he was absurdly traded by hometown team Toronto FC and then after he was dealt in the same season by the disappointing New York Red Bulls. And now DeRo, as he is affectionately known, has gotten the respect – though not yet the money – he so richly deserves.
He has been named Major League Soccer’s MVP for 2011 after leading the league with 16 goals, 12 assists and buckets of heart and competitiveness.
Recently ex-Arsenal legend and current New York Red Bull Thierry Henry gave an outsider’s perspective and explained to everyone just how great DeRo is:
“In this league, I haven’t seen anybody better than Dwayne De Rosario. It is easy to say that because he scored 16 (goals) and 12 (assists) but I saw him in training.
“I thought he was a decent player in Toronto and when I saw his record, saw he won four MLS Cups and (has) been in the league for a very long time, I think you guys should talk about him more. For me, he’s the face of the league. His record talks for itself.”
Three goals in 9 minutes and he is traded twice in a season?
There is something still seriously wrong with “Major” League Soccer.
What do you think folks? Despite being dumped by two teams – his hometown Toronto FC and the tanking New York Red Bulls – because those teams would not declare him a “designated player” – could DC United’s Dwayne De Rosario be the best player in the MLS?
“Dwayne De Rosario scored a stunning first-half hat trick in just nine minutes to lead D.C. United to a convincing 4-1 win over Real Salt Lake at RFK stadium on Saturday night before a crowd of 16,367. De Rosario, who also assisted on Andy Najar’s opening goal, is now Major League Soccer’s scoring leader with 13 goals. And with 11 assists on the season, the Canadian striker is a potential candidate for the league’s MVP award.”
Canadian eh?
Pity he wasn’t permitted to stay home to teach TFC about what it takes to be the best.
