ESPNsoccernet has reported that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made a special trip to France last month to watch Belgian international Eden Hazard perform for Lille.
According to United’s first-team coach Rene Meulensteen, the visit was typical of the lengths the manager will go to once he has a player in his sights:
“It’s important for a club to keep refreshing the squad. Hazard is a special talent, but concluding these things always takes a while. For example, we were tracking David de Gea for a long time before we signed him.
“Ferguson wants to know the player’s character, and because of that he makes personal trips to watch them. Hazard is the main man at Lille and so Ferguson wanted to see if that had had an influence on him.”
This development seems much more believable than all of the talk which surrounded the very expensive Wesley Sneijder during and after the last World Cup: Ferguson likes them young, relatively affordable and with upside.
In that way, it is Hazard who really fits the bill as a potential replacement for Paul Scholes.
