Speaking to Soccernet’s Harry Harris at the launch of Harris’ new book “19″, Argentine legend Ossie Ardiles was asked to reflect on compatriot Sergio Kun Aguero’s 2 goal debut with Manchester City.
Ardiles responded by predicting that Aguero would become Europe’s top scorer:
“He scored around 24 goals last season in an average Atletico side, while Messi and Ronaldo were scoring freely in the best two teams in La Liga. Now Sergio is in England with a very good team, he will be up there scoring and will be England’s top goalscorer, for sure.”
That is a mouth-watering prospect indeed. It was entertaining enough to watch Messi and Ronaldo in their goal-scoring race last season but a third contestant would also be nice.
It would be doubly nice if Wayne Rooney joined in, making it a four-horse race, with two players battling it out in Spain and two more going head-to-head in the city of Manchester.
The next big Premier League star has arrived folks. Argentina’s Sergio “Kun” Aguero, via a transfer from La Liga side Athletico Madrid, is it.
Believe it.
After the star-studded Manchester City struggled to score one goal versus newly promoted Swansea, Aguero came on as a substitute and proceeded to score two goals and set up another.
He scored his first goal (video) using his trademark quickness and gile to tap-in a laser of a ball from Micah Richards at the far post.
Then he used his speed, determination and skill to get to a ball that was going out to touch and pull it back over his head for David Silva to finish from the penalty spot (video).
And then the message: with no one expecting more drama from a match that had gone explosively from a scoreless affair to 3-0, Aguero contributed the biggest firework of all: a bomb of a shot from thirty yards that left Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm flailing at air.
Two goals and an assist in thirty minutes. Fantastic.
Fantasy?
Not. You can be sure that city rivals Manchester United will believe everything they saw from Maradona’s son-in-law. Sir Alex will know that Kun is the real deal.
Moreover, fantasy league players will have taken note too. The discussion over at Fantasy Football Scout shows that people are now scrambling to get him into their line-ups for week two.
It’s as if he came out of nowhere. But the truth is that not only will Aguero easily be one of the best players in the Premier League, he has long been considered potentially one of the best players in the world.

Oliver Holt on Aguero’s performance > in the Mirror: “Sometimes, it just takes a spark. A player who can turn a good side into a title-winning side. A player who suddenly seems to solve all the niggling problems and the misfires. A player who ignites all the good players around him and whose very presence makes everything fall into place.”
