Following Leonel Angel Coira: Enjoying the journey of becoming a player

There is some choice footage here in this Spanish TV news feature. Even if you don’t speak Spanish you can enjoy seeing in this video some great young players when they were young: Maradona, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Neymar, Aguero, Iniesta, Cristiano Roanldo and Messi.

Will Leo Coira make it big? It is very hard to say at this point even though he has been signed by Real Madrid. Just making it as a pro is a long and unpredictable road, never mind becoming a big star.

There are two important things for Leo to keep in mind during this journey. One is to work hard so that he has no regrets. The other is to enjoy himself every step of the way just in case he doesn’t make it.

That’s a healthy approach for all players, including current professionals. You have to enjoy what you achieve in the moment because in sports, especially pro sports, you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Just ask Freddy Adu – the one-time American prodigy – featured in the video – who was supposed to make it big but didn’t. I really hope that he is enjoying his football still. He is the property of the great Benfica but has been loaned out to other European teams several times. Still you have to enjoy that. Not every player gets to play pro in Europe.

I believe that for every player, every day you stay on top, every day you learn, grow, score, win – is like a trophy.

Yes, the feeling and the memory of a good day on the pitch is just like a trophy – something to be cherished.

I hope that Leo and the people around him keep this in mind when his journey with Real Madrid starts on September 6th with his first training session.

May September 6th be a day that he enjoys and remembers for the rest of his life.

Following Real Madrid 7-year-old Leonel Angel Coira: New video

Not a great video of Real Madrid’s famous Seven-Year-Old. After all, he does miss the net on his first shot. And the video is quite short. But it is the beginning of what could be a long and – we hope – happy story.

We’ve been trying to get more information on Leo. One thing we’re not quite sure about is Leo’s actual birthdate. I’m sure this will be released at some time but for now we’re gong to say that the little soccer prodigy was for all intents and purposes born the day the news broke, on the day his first video was launched and his Facebook page created: Monday August 8, 2011.

That’s his Internet Birthday, if you will.

The Seven-Year-Old, who goes by the nickname of Leo just like his idol and compatriot Lionel Messi, will begin training on Sept. 6, Madrid spokesperson Juan Tapiador told the Associated Press on Monday.

“Lionel Messi is my idol but my dream is to play in the Real Madrid first team,” Leo told the Argentine sports daily Ole.

His father Miguel, who is the coach of a small team in the Madrid suburbs, told Spanish newspaper ABC that Leonel had signed a one-year contract that can be renewed, but will receive no salary. From the age of 16 he can play in the first team.

He said his son decided on Real after receiving an offer from cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid.

“The scouts (at Atletico) saw him and were the first to send a letter of invitation but after doing tests at both teams, he felt more comfortable at Real Madrid. I’m very confident about the club, I know they will take care of him,” he said.

According to goal.com, Real Madrid snapped up the youngster to ward off attempts by other European clubs in the future – namely rival Atletico Madrid, which Ole said had already expressed interest in Coira.

Coira told Ole last week that he preferred making assists over scoring goals, that he can juggle a ball eight or nine times without dropping it and that his dream is to play for Real Madrid’s first team, which is home to some of the world’s greatest players, including Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

That’s right folks this is the player that everyone is talking about: Leo Angel Coira. And he is indeed 7 years-old and he has indeed been signed by Real Madrid. Looks like Real want the next great Leo (Leo Messi) who comes out of Argentina.
