Lionel Messi

How many will Messi score today in El Clasico?

Not a spectacular goal – but they all count: #40 in La Liga for Messi in 2011-2012.

Barcelona needed both of Lionel Messi’s goals today to defeat Levante and stay within 4 points of La Liga leading Real Madrid.

With his team down 1-0, Messi tied the match, then sealed it with a sharply hit penalty.

The second goal gave him 41 for the season and the same as Cristiano Ronaldo – up until then the La Liga top scorer – who had scored earlier vs Sporting Gijon.

Next up for the two players is El Clasico – where they will go head-to-head in determining their own status and that of their teams.

What a treat that will be: Messi vs Cristiano, Barca vs Real.

Who will come out on top on the day?

I had predicted that we would hear > Pele retract his statement that Neymar is better than Messi.

I should have expected the obvious though – that crazy-man Diego Maradona would wade into the issue.

Maradona sarcastically had this to say about Pele’s assessment of Messi:

“My God, that is just stupid. Maybe Neymar is the best player in the world, but only if you say that Messi is from a different planet,” Maradona said.

I rarely take Maradona’s side in anything but I think he’s bang-on here.

Pele’s comment on Messi is stupid.

Everybody knows that right now Messi is the best, right?

I wonder if somehow Pele was misquoted or perhaps had a few too many glasses of wine with dinner.

Here’s how he responded to a question about Lionel Messi being the best player ever:

“Now everyone is talking about Messi; he is a star. But [to be the best ever] he must first become better than Neymar,” Pele said. “At the moment Messi is just more experienced.”

A curious twist on a question which actually seems to be about Pele and Maradona.

Why does he throw Neymar into the equation?

It is clear to most people these days that Messi is the best player in the world right now.

Even Neymar himself has admitted this.

I’m sure that very soon we’ll be hearing Pele retracting this statement.
