To commemorate the opening of the World Track & Field Championships today in South Korea, Best Player turns to the track for this installment of Worst Hair.
Track fans (especially Kiwis like BP’s own Prime Minister) will fondly remember the exploits of the incredible John Walker, who ruled middle-distance running in the mid-1970s. Walker was the first to run sub-3:50 in the mile, and was the 1976 Olympic 1500m gold medallist.
But…the hair, Sir John, always the hair. Aerodynamics experts have calculated that Walker could have, er, shaved another 4.5 seconds off his mile time had he been as closely shorn as his main rival at the time, Filbert Bayi.
Walker finished his career with a stunning 135 sub-4 minute miles. But to Auckland barbers, he will always be remembered as a lost opportunity.
