Best Player, Worst Hair #8 – Lasith Malinga

Gaze upon me, ye batsmen, and be bowled LBW

Worst Hair turns today to the cricket pitch and to flamboyant Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga.

At 27, the “Slinga” is one of the best in the world: he delivers lethally fast and accurate balls with a rare round-arm action that’s won him numous wickets in international competition. Those facing him find his bowling very difficult to hit…or it could be they’re distracted by his characteristic crazy mane of frosted serpentine locks.

Either way, many unlucky batsmen facing Malinga over the years have frozen at his approach, all fierce countenance and hair writhing above… could be they’d have been better served by leaving their cricket bats in the clubhouse and taking their position armed with a mirror, sword, and magic sandals.

"Howzat, umpire?"

  1. Abbot – did you photoshop that hair? It’s a little hard to believe that someone would look like that on purpose.

  2. That’s really his hair, although this is a particularly excellent photo of it. Unorthodox hair, unorthodox action (both he and Murali were frequently, and wrongly, accused of having illegal bowling actions). He just became the first person to take a hat-trick (3 wickets from consecutive balls) three times in one-day internationals, and is the only person ever to have taken 4 in a row in an international match (against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup). He has retired from test cricket to prolong his career in the shorter (and more lucrative) versions of the game, and Sri Lanka are already missing him badly.
