Best Player, Worst Hair #4 – Roberto Baggio

Baggio: stunt double for Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie" - AS Tootsie

Today’s Best Player, Worst Hair returns us to the fertile ground of the soccer pitch. We zero in on Roberto Baggio, one of the best players to ever don the azzurri blue for Italy…with one of the all-time worst hairdos, even by that country’s, er, unique standards.

Baggio in this period may have been taking some grooming tips from hockey’s Jaromir Jagr – or he may have somehow not noticed the injured animal clinging to the back of his neck. Or maybe it was some obscure Buddhist dictum. Either way, “the Divine Ponytail” made a strong impression on footie fans around the world, who for years advised their children to play like Baggio but – mia madre – to keep clear of his hair stylist.

  1. Ah yes…the Divine Ponytail. Forgot about that. I feel like I’m betraying Buddhism but…yes…that was a bad cut, Robbie – at least it seems so now. Couldn’t find much wrong with you back in the day. Beautiful player playing the beautiful game like few others – but yes, perhaps, your hairstyle was not so beautiful? (Well done Abbot. You surprised me with this one. Keep ’em coming!)
